Trekking in Nepal is walking between villages, sleeping in lodges, and gaining height slowly enough that your body keeps up. It needs no climbing experience and no technical gear. What it needs is a reasonable level of fitness, boots that are already broken in, and an itinerary that does not gain height faster than you can acclimatise to.

Annapurna Base Camp is the trek we run most often, and it is the best first Himalayan trek there is: six days from Pokhara, a high point of 4,130 metres, and a finish inside a glacial amphitheatre ringed by peaks on every side. You walk up a narrowing river gorge for three days and then the valley simply opens.

The season matters. Spring — March to May — brings rhododendron in flower through the middle forest and warmer nights. Autumn, late September to December, brings the clearest air of the year and the sharpest mountain views.

Every trek includes a licensed guide, all permits and TIMS paperwork, lodge accommodation and three meals a day. Insurance covering your maximum altitude and helicopter evacuation is required, and is not included — we say so on the trip page rather than in the small print.
