Overview

The trek to Everest Base Camp is the most famous walk on Earth, and it earns its name. Over twelve days you fly into Lukla, climb through Sherpa villages and pine forest to Namche Bazaar, pass the monasteries of the Khumbu, and follow the glacier up to the foot of the world's highest mountain at 5,364 metres. From Kala Patthar at dawn, Everest stands directly ahead — the view that draws trekkers from every corner of the world.

Everest Base Camp is a bucket-list trek for good reason. It takes you into the Khumbu, the homeland of the Sherpa people, and delivers you to the base of Sagarmatha itself.

The journey begins with the spectacular mountain flight to Lukla. From there the trail climbs to Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital, where you spend a day acclimatising. You continue past Tengboche Monastery — with its famous view of Ama Dablam — through Dingboche and Lobuche, gaining altitude carefully, to Gorak Shep. From there you walk the final stretch across the glacier to Everest Base Camp, and climb Kala Patthar at 5,545 metres for the classic sunrise view of Everest.

We run this trek fully supported, with a licensed, experienced guide who knows the Khumbu and manages the pace for safe acclimatisation. All your permits, teahouse lodging and mountain meals are arranged. Two acclimatisation days are built into the itinerary — the single most important factor in reaching base camp safely.

This is a challenging trek. There is no technical climbing, but you walk five to seven hours a day at high altitude over twelve days. Good fitness and prior hiking experience are strongly recommended. Spring and autumn offer the most stable weather and clearest views.

Common questions about this trip

How fit do I need to be?

This is a challenging high-altitude trek — five to seven hours of walking a day for twelve days. No climbing skills are needed, but good fitness and some hiking experience are strongly recommended.

What about altitude sickness?

We build in two acclimatisation days and climb gradually, which is the key to trekking safely at this altitude. Your guide watches everyone closely, and we require insurance that covers helicopter evacuation.

The mountain views were even better than the photos. The accommodation and food exceeded my expectations throughout the journey.
